Joie En Route: Southern Portugal

What Southern Portugal taught me about joy.

Colorful tiles, sunshine and perhaps a lovely stroll amongst the seaside.

That was all I imagined and dreamed of when I heard our family vacation was going to be in Southern Portugal this year.

Portugal has been on my sister-in-law’s bucket list pretty much since I met her. So, when the “where to take the family vacation?” question came up late last year, and Portugal was the winner…. I was excited, but I didn’t really feel a strong pull either way.

Until I got there.

After navigating a wee mess of airport lines, we stepped out into warm, sun- drenched skies with the most lovely of sea breezes grazing our faces in Lisbon.

I was sold.

Head over heels did I fall in love with Portugal for the next nine days of my life. And, my goodness, did it teach me a lot about joy in the process, too.

While one could easily say any city in the world has a deep history and culture (just go on any walking tour in any city in any country), Lisbon really and truly does.

Friendly people, amazing sights, and golden beaches (both physically and metaphorically) are just a few reasons why this place might just be one of the most joyful places I have ever visited.
